"While the rest of us sit around passively taking in the political build-up south of the border, ex-pats Chris Brown and Kate Fenner do what they do best -- step up to the plate with searing songs that offer a glimpse into the human condition. The Brooklyn-via-Toronto duo may not have a vote but they made sure they had a say by rush-releasing this five-song EP before the election. And what a lament for their adopted home it is -- the pair have always worn their consciences on their sleeves, but Go On harkens back to their earliest work in its righteous outrage. "With a smirk and a swagger and a hand that won't shake / Half-thug, half-victim, what a heartbreak," Fenner wails on the aptly titled "Contempt." The duo's longtime band adds a soulful vibe to a remake of "Resist War" with horns and deep grooves but the new version isn't quite as immediate as the bare-bones original that was adopted by many as a peace anthem last year.
